The Furniture/Cabinetmaking Program at ASPC-Lewis trains incarcerated students to build and repair contemporary and period furniture. Incarcerated students learn fundamental hand and power tool skills needed to produce real products for a real customer and provide marketable skills for a competitive industry.

The goal of this program is to train incarcerated students in the craft and artistry of fine woodworking. Hand tool skills are stressed and students become well versed in wood joinery applications such as various types of dovetail joinery, mortise and tenon joints and the hardware used in joining wood. Other hand tool skills learned are relief and chip carving, steam bending, lathe turning, and the use of planes. Different types of wood are analyzed for proper application in cabinet and furniture construction. These skills are taught in a shop setting. Students also learn the importance of good furniture design where they gain important drafting and mathematical skills.

The fine woodworking skills learned through this program give released offenders a viable means of employment in a wide variety of related fields such as finish carpentry, cabinet and furniture making.
